Building a Peaceful Future: Empowering Women and NGOs to Combat Violent Extremism

At the direct invitation of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Iraq, our organization, Mercy Path for Women's Affairs, recently had the honor of participating in a significant workshop focused on building the capacity of local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in writing and implementing initiatives to prevent violent extremism. This workshop was organized by the National Committee for the Implementation of the Countering Violent Extremism Strategy at the National Security Advisory, in collaboration with UNDP and funded by the Government of Denmark. The event was held in Erbil over two days, 23-24 July 2024.

Representing our organization at this impactful workshop were our President, lawyer Amani Mohammed, and Mr. Haider Rabah. Over the two days, our team engaged in in-depth discussions, provided valuable advice, and shared key lessons learned from our extensive work in community peace initiatives and preventing violent extremism. The workshop aimed to empower local NGOs by enhancing their skills and knowledge in crafting effective strategies to counter violent extremism. Participants from various organizations gathered to discuss best practices, challenges, and innovative approaches to foster peace and security within their communities.

At Mercy Path for Women's Affairs, we firmly believe in the power of women's and girls' active participation in society. As educated and empowered individuals, women and girls can serve as teachers, mentors, role models, journalists, faith leaders, healers, and community leaders. Their involvement is crucial in building resilience against the influence and spread of violent extremism. By empowering women and girls, we strengthen the social fabric and promote a more inclusive and peaceful society. We are committed to continuing our efforts in preventing violent extremism through education, empowerment, and active community engagement. Our participation in this workshop has further reinforced our dedication to this cause and provided us with new insights and strategies to implement in our initiatives.

Stay tuned for more updates on our projects and activities aimed at promoting peace, security, and the empowerment of women and girls in Iraq. We invite you to join us in our mission to create a safer and more inclusive society. Your support and involvement can make a significant difference in the lives of many.
